Gardening Journal

New House, 2005

The existing vegetation in the front was mostly unsuited for the light (hostas in full sun!) or the wrong shape and size for the purpose it was supposed to serve. So I freecycled all of that and, with the exception of the shrubs, I started over. I planted two types of roses, salvia, lots of daylilies, asters, irises, gaillardia, sedum, and echinacea. I lost the echinacea last year but am replanting, and I'm adding some pinks and more asters.

Old House, 2003-2005

I began by cleaning out the driveway bed (overrun with lamb's ears and dying azaleas).  I cleaned junipers out of a round bed in the front and moved an azalea nearer to the house, where it will get afternoon shade.  I also planted two trees in the front.  Near the house in the back, we planted numerous shrubs and several trees, as well as some perennials.

House sold in July 2006.

Stay tuned for more journal entries as my garden progresses!
